On a decent-sized front yard conversion that is a real line item, and it exists because the water authority worked out that a rock yard with no canopy is a heat problem even if it is a water solution. We plan the canopy first and lay out the granite around it, not the other way round. The planting technique is where trees are made or ruined, and the failure mode here is specific. Caliche. Dig a standard pit in a valley yard and you very often bottom out on a cemented pan that holds water like a bathtub, and the tree drowns in a place that gets four inches of rain a year. We probe before we dig. Where the pan is shallow we punch through it or excavate laterally so the pit drains into permeable material rather than sitting in a sealed hole. Beyond that the rules are the ordinary good ones that get broken constantly: dig the hole two to three times the width of the root ball and no deeper than the ball itself, set the root flare at or slightly above finished grade, score circling roots on container stock so they do not girdle the trunk in five years, and backfill with the native soil you took out rather than a pit of imported compost that becomes a second bathtub the roots never leave. Planting too deep is the leading cause of slow tree death and it happens on professionally installed jobs all the time. Staking is another one. We stake only when the site or the tree genuinely needs it, we stake low and loose so the trunk can flex and build taper, and we come back to remove the straps — the step everyone forgets until the wire is growing into the bark. Watering instructions come written down, because a new tree wants deep infrequent soaking on its own drip zone, on a completely different schedule from turf, and running both off the same valve guarantees one of them is unhappy. Species choice should lean desert-adapted and it should account for wind. Chilean mesquite grows fast and gives lovely filtered shade, and it also blows over in a summer microburst if it was staked badly and never trained. Palo verde is tougher and slower. Cenizo asks for nothing and blooms after humidity. Note that Clark County has prohibited planting fruitless mulberry and European olive since 1991 because of their pollen, so those two are off the list regardless of what a nursery elsewhere might sell you.
