It knits fast, takes cleat traffic, recovers from the beating a goalmouth absorbs across a season, and can be mown short enough to give a true roll. In this climate it also does the thing that matters most: it survives 110-degree afternoons on a restricted irrigation schedule without going backwards. Where a field has limited irrigation capacity we build on TifTuf instead, which holds green colour under water stress longer than the older lines. Where a field is used through the winter — and in a valley where January afternoons are pleasant, most are — we overseed with perennial ryegrass in October so there is a playing surface rather than dormant straw from November to March. Grade is where fields are won and lost. We laser-grade to a planar surface with either a centre crown or a directional fall depending on the sport, because a low spot in the middle of a pitch is unplayable for two days after a monsoon burst and the turf there dies first. The Mojave rains rarely but it rains hard, and a field with nowhere to send four inches an hour is a field with a bathtub in it. Under the grade, caliche is the recurring problem: it is a cemented pan that will not perc, so on most valley sites the fix is either excavation and a sand-capped rootzone or a drain tile grid, and relaying sod over an undrained pan is a way of spending the money twice. We will tell you which one your site needs before we bid it, and we will tell you when the honest answer is drainage rather than more grass. Renovation scopes usually include stripping worn zones, killing off invaded common Bermuda and weedy grasses, re-establishing grade, topdressing with washed sand, and reinstalling with big-roll sod where access allows. Big roll gives fewer seams and a faster, more even grow-in than slab sod, and on a playing surface seams show up in how the ball behaves. Mid-season we handle goalmouth and infield-arc repairs, aeration and topdressing to fight compaction, and a fertility schedule written around your play calendar rather than a generic spring-and-fall program. For schools, leagues and municipal parks we work around practice and game days, keep the site fenced and clean during install, and quote a realistic grow-in window instead of an optimistic one. Tifway 419 laid in June with proper irrigation is playable far sooner than the same install in November — the agronomy sets the schedule, not the other way round.
